Posses and bandit groups have played an interesting role in history, particularly in American history, where they’ve been on both sides of the law.
In colonial America, there was what was called the “posse comitatus,” — a group of civilians who would assist the constable or sheriff whenever necessary. Only if their power was insufficient would law enforcement or the military be called in to help.[1]
Outlaw gangs can be found throughout history, but bandit groups like those affiliated with Jesse James and Billy the Kid remain notorious more than 150 years after they roamed the West.[2]
Whether you’re playing Red Dead Redemption, Dungeons & Dragons, or creating a posse/bandit group in a different game, you don’t need to just use [Your Name]’s Posse to identify your group. Choosing a more creative and unique name is fun and can make your posse more memorable.
Below, we have more than 100 posse and bandit group name ideas, plus tips for how to create your own great posse name!

How to Create Your Own Great Posse Name
Posse and bandit group names don’t have any rules to abide by, other than choosing one that isn’t used by another group.
Your name can be as long or short as you want, it can be serious or funny, or it can be somewhat expected or completely obscure.
With so much creative freedom in choosing your name, if you don’t want to use any of the options on our list, consider the following tips (many of which we also used when creating our name ideas):
- Get inspired by history. Red Dead Redemption is inspired by the old West and the American frontier. Even if you aren’t a history buff, a quick web search can help you find a lot of historical inspiration — from famous outlaws like Billy the Kid to historic events like the Gold Rush. Even if you aren’t playing Red Dead Redemption specifically, Western U.S. history is full of wild events and true stories that can inspire cool posse names.
- Get inspired by pop culture. When compiling our list of team names, we browsed the web and found that a lot of players base their posse names on favorite movies or songs. On more than one occasion, players mentioned listening to a particular song while creating their name and pulling a lyric or using the title to inspire their posse name. This can help you gather a wide array of options and tailor your name to your interests.
- Use your own name, but use it cleverly. While [Your Name]’s Posse is generally thought of as too generic and unoriginal, that doesn’t mean you can’t use your own name for inspiration. For example, someone with the last name Crowe could use a name like “Crowe’s Nest” — not quite as unique as some of our other suggestions, but still clever and easy to create.
