Organized warfare has been a part of human life since at least 3000 BCE when the first standing army is believed to have formed in Mesopotamia.[1]
In the U.S., the military was first established during the American Revolution in the 1770s and became more formalized during the Mexican-American War in the 1840s.[2]
Today’s U.S. Military has six branches — the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force[3] — and over 700 bases worldwide.[4]

How to Create Your Own Military Team Name
While one of the options on our list above might be perfect for your team, you might also want to create a team name that’s more personal and considers your team’s input. Create your own military team name with the following tips:
- Use what you know. You’re probably familiar with a lot of common military jargon, so think about the terms and definitions that you know. Chances are you already know a word (or several) that would make a great military team name — or at least help you generate ideas for your team.
- Research unfamiliar aspects of the military. No matter how deep your knowledge, there’s always more to learn. Look into military history and any unfamiliar terminology that catches your interest to find more inspiration for your team name. You can use a single word or combine several. Favorite numbers or other personal identifiers can also be added to make the team name more personal.
- Think about specific military branches and operations. We concentrated on general military-related terms for our list, but for a unique and individualistic team name, you can get as detailed as you like. Use terminology specific to your branch of the military to give your team name an “insiders only” feel.
- Put your teamwork skills to good use. Strong teamwork is essential in military units. Your team should already be excellent at working together, so put those skills to work and collectively brainstorm to find the best team name. Split into small groups or submit name suggestions individually, then take a vote to find the option most reflective of your team’s spirit.
