How to Create a Great Fantasy Basketball Team or League Name

While there aren’t usually strict rules for fantasy basketball names, they often serve two purposes: to make people laugh and highlight one of the best players.

Find the perfect fantasy basketball team or league name by keeping the following tips in mind:

  • Choose the top player from your roster. Whether the top player on your roster is a superstar like LeBron James or someone lesser-known, you can take their first and/or last name and create your team name out of it. (Our list includes many examples of this.) Substitute the player’s first or last name into a phrase, swapping out a word that sounds similar, or add words like “crew” and “tribe” to position that player as your team’s leader.
  • Incorporate lots of humor into your team name. Fantasy basketball team names are meant to be funny. Creating the wittiest or punniest team name can become a separate competition in and of itself! If the player’s name reminds you of a funny song, quote, or joke, find a way to include that in your team name.
  • Use alliteration. If you’re using a player’s name but stuck for ideas, look up words that start with the same letter as that player’s name and see if any of them suit your team. For example, a team named after Stephen Curry might use “Steph’s Savvy.”
  • Watch the game for inspiration. Nothing will get your excitement and creativity flowing like watching your favorite sport. By watching a basketball game or two while looking out for anything that may strike you as a possible great and unique team name, you may be surprised how many options you find. Think about the colors that represent your favorite teams or basketball terms and phrases that may be useful in creating your unique team name.
